    Stopping plaquenil cold turkey

I've been on plaquenil for 6 months for suspected Sjogren's syndrome (I don't have antibodies for Sjorgren's or Lupus but I do have Hashimoto's and have all the symptoms for Sjorgren's so the rheumatologist suggested a trial of plaquenil). Basically I've been on the drug since January and saw the rheumatologist on Wednesday to see how things are going.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but after quitting methotrexate cold turkey, I went through a period of improved quality of life 2 months, then I took a sharp decline and had the worst joint swelling I've experienced to date. Everyone is different, and since you are taking Plaquenil too, it could be less severe, only time would tell. You had to stop all your meds, cold turkey. Did you go off plaquenil? Can you go off all those meds that quickly? Were you on pred, if so how many mgs? I didn't go off any meds when I started on methotrexate. I stayed on plaquenil, my NSAID, everything. What kind of lupus doctor is it? A rheumatologist? I have read about people stopping P & flaring up. Those who stopped it abruptly had real problems similar to what you are experiencing. If you really need to get off it, I would taper down slowly, very slowly. There is a similar posting on Healthunlocked, "Why oh why did u stop taking plaquenil." You may want to check it out.

I do think it's helped with fatigue and muscle pain but it's hard for me to compare to Xmas as when the improvement is so gradual I think it's really hard to notice on a gradual basis. I *think* I'm improving but it's been a gradual process and I said to him that it's quite hard to tell how much of an improvement I'm feeling.

Once you and your doctor are sure the drug works for you, do not stop taking hydroxychloroquine without talking to your doctor. Symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis will return if you stop taking hydroxychloroquine.

Hi honey, YES.stopping plaquenil for a couple of days can cause symptoms to arise or get worse.needs to be taken exactly as prescribed. Twice a day, every day. Missing one dose wont make a major difference but skipping more then one, or days absolutely can. I was on plaquenil for about 6 months. I told my rheumy that I really didnt feel like it was helping much, so he took me off it cold turkey last monday. So this past week I have had several very bad days and a few "normal" days. Im just wondering if it is a coincedence or if stopping the plaq could make me feel worse that quickly. Any ideas? Nov 12, 2009 Plaquenil is a 6-weeker as far as the benefits are concerned, but it would be more dangerous to stop if you spend a lot of time outside and if this were the summer. If you're gonna experiment, I went off it cold turkey as it didn't hurt to do it that way, but you better get back on before the summer or you could experience a flare-up.
