    I have been on prednisone for 15 months and am down to 5 mg. I cannot seem to get below that dose without having a flate. My rheumatologist has started me on Plaquenil and has said this should help me get off the prednisone. He said he would rather see me on Plaquenil instead of prednisone due to less side effects of the Plaquenil. The prednisone is a steriod and the plaquenil is a anti malaria drug. The thing with plaquenil for me is that I don't notice much of anything taking it but when I go off then I flare up and then really notice it. I have been taking the plaquinil for about 8 years morning and night and the prednisone off and on. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disorder for which there is no known cure. Fortunately in the last few years, a shift in strategy toward the earlier institution of disease modifying drugs and the availability of new classes of medications have greatly improved the outcomes that can be expected by most patients.
